A day in the life of... Joanna Walmsley

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we caught up with Joanna Walmsley, Finance Assistant at The Auto Network to talk us through her day.

My alarm goes off... At 7.10am, then another one every 5 minutes until I decide to finally drag myself out of bed. It’s usually then a rush to get ready for work, quickly grabbing my lunch on the way out of the door, followed by a speedy walk to the bus stop in the hope I haven’t missed it!

My typical day looks like... Starting with a morning cup of tea once I arrive at work. I start at 9am and I get stuck into my daily activities straight away but before you know it, I’ve been loaded with other tasks and the morning absolutely flies by.

We’re lucky enough to have a pool table in our office so I tend to enjoy a game or two with colleagues during my lunch hour. Afterwards, it’s straight back to my desk to continue my to-do list. It’s always really busy, during the beginning of the month I have a lot of invoicing to get done by deadline date and then towards the end of the month its payroll time to ensure all of the staff are paid.

I got the job... After I finished Sixth Form. I was working in a shoe shop at the time, I knew I didn’t want to go to university but I also didn’t want to work in retail for the rest of my life! That’s when I found out about apprenticeships and Liverpool Chamber Training; I signed up online and told them what I was interesting in. I loved Maths at school so going into finance and working with numbers seemed really exciting.

The Chamber were so quick at getting in touch with job offers, within a month of my initial meeting, I’d had 2 interviews with The Auto Network and they were asking for me to start ASAP!

What I love about what I do...  Is that everyone is so friendly and supportive; I enjoy coming to work every single day! We’re quite a small business so everyone gets along well and there’s always a really positive working environment, I love that everyone has had so much confidence in me, it’s been fantastic to have so much responsibility and my knowledge has developed so much.

For a young person looking to pursue the same line of work, I’d tell them... Just to give it a go, you never know if you will like something unless you try. If you have an area you're passionate about then work towards it and follow your dreams!

My proudest accomplishment... On a professional level would be our payroll change over. We decided to bring it back in house and I’m now personally responsible for everyone’s wages within the organisation. It was such a daunting task to start with as I had absolutely no idea what to do but with plenty of practice over time, it’s now become a really enjoyable task.

After work... I either head home for a catch up with my mum about our daily activities or meet friends for dinner (the best perk about working is having more money to socialise)!

If I could do another job for just one day, I would... Become a professional sky diver, imagine the thrill you would experience every day!
