“We’ve proved that Liverpool workers can compete with the best” – Ministry of Defence Staff hail Apprenticeship Achievements
The achievements of apprenticeship learners at the Defence Business Services, a strand of the UK Government's Ministry of Defence, were today commemorated in a ceremony in Liverpool City Centre.
The awards were presented to 28 candidates who had completed their qualifications with Liverpool Chamber Training, the apprenticeship arm of the city’s Chamber of Commerce.
Councillor Nick Small, The Mayor’s Cabinet Member for Skills joined DBS Chief Executive Rod McCurdy and Mary Smyth, Operations Manager at Liverpool Chamber Training to present the awards to employees who had completed NVQ qualifications ranging from level 2 in customer service to level 5 in management.
The DBS represents one of the largest, albeit more discreet, employers in the city and has maintained a culture of personal career development and commitment to training throughout the recent period of austerity.
The partnership between the DBS and the Chamber has made a massive contribution to the confidence, knowledge and skills of the workforce. The successful attainment of Level 5 Management qualifications by eight employees was particularly celebrated as it defies local statistics suggesting Level 5 attainment in Liverpool is some way short of the national average.
Paul Lindsay, now NVQ-qualified in Level 3 management, was bullish in his assessment of the achievements of both himself and his colleagues: “We’re a national organisation but we’ve proved with these awards that a local workforce in Liverpool can deliver when given a chance and we’ve got a lot to thank our board, management team and the Chamber for giving us that chance to demonstrate that capability”
Rod McCurdy, Chief Executive of the DBS commented: “Investing in our current staff and recruiting through Liverpool Chamber Training has without a doubt, led to some fantastic achievements for every learner and this is perfect recognition of their valuable contribution to our organisation. Ten percent of our work force has now undergone a full apprenticeship framework which helps to validate and document their varied skill-sets and positive working attitude. We’re absolutely delighted with their progress.”

There are lots of opportunities for career progression that each apprentice can take and we’re delighted that the Chamber of Commerce will continue to play an important role in helping them achieve their aspirations.”
Cllr Nick Small praised the DBS commitment and investment towards employee personal development and particularly the focus on lifelong apprentices. “Apprenticeships have become synonymous with young people starting their careers but the qualifications are applicable and rewarding to workers of all ages and experience.”
